For many guys going to pick out his first tuxedo for prom can be a scary and overwhelming experience. To help him get through it, here are some time and tricks that will make it easier.
Picking a Store
Finding the best store at the best pricing isn’t always easy. Just because it’s a national chain doesn’t mean you will get the best deal or the best service. At Proms Pageants and Pretty Things we believe we give you the best service, selection and pricing available so be sure to check in to it before you go. Also, try to go to the store on a weekday. It’s quitter, less crowded and less intimidating then a weekend. It will make the process much more enjoyable.
Our basic black tuxedo starts at $74.95 but what does that mean to you and what will come with it? With us you get everything but the shoes. That means jacket, pants, shirt, black bow tie and black backless vest. If you want a backed colored vest and tie option it is only $94.95. We do rent shoes at an additional fee if you need them. There are other tuxedo’s and suits available as well, at other prices.
If you don’t want a black tuxedo don’t worry. Tuxedo’s and suits come in several different colors including white, ivory, grey, tan and navy blue. You also get to choose from 3 different styles of vests and ties (bow ties or windsor ties) that come in all the different colors of the rainbow (and some that aren’t on the rainbow as well).
In addition to the suit and tuxedo rentals mentioned, there are several add-ons that you can get at an additional price. You can get shoes in black, brown, white, ivory or grey, you can also get pocket squares that go in your front pocket to match the accent color of your vest and tie. You can change up your look by adding colored suspenders, plaid bow ties and colored sockets. You can also trade out the traditional pleated tuxedo shirt for a flat front microfiber shirt, if you would rather. If you really want to take it to the next level you can add a top hat and cane too!
How it Works
How do you rent a suit or tuxedo? It’s easier than you think. Come to the store we will walk you through the steps or, if you want to pick your look before you come (or get some help picking it from friends and family)? Just go to Jim’s Tuxedo’s build a tux page and play with colors and styles until you have put together the perfect prom look. You will want to order your tux at least 2 weeks in advance to avoid any extra fees.
Pick out your look from the tuxedo book
Pick the color vest and tie you want to match your date (see tips for matching below)
Pick the accessories you want to add to make your look your own
Get measured to make sure your tux will fit when it comes in (don’t worry, we don’t do it like they used to in the movies, we measure your outseam now, not your inseam, it’s less awkward for both of us).
Pay a ½ deposit to get your ordered placed.
On the date provided, come back and try your tux on to make sure it fits. Your consultant will also show you how to put on your tie, adjust your pants and put in your cuff links.
Pay the balance of your bill
Have a great time at the prom
Return the tuxedo by the time and dates indicated on your ticket
It’s that simple!!
Matching Your Dates Dress
One of the most difficult parts of getting your tuxedo is matching your dates color. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is having her take a picture of the color and trying to match it that way. Frequently colors don’t photograph the same as they look in person and that can lead to getting incorrect color matches. Here are some suggestions of ways to get the right color.
Get a sample of her dress (something left over from alterations, a shoulder strap are good choices)
Have your date bring her dress in ahead of time and have the consultant write down the best color choices
Pick a complementary color that would work with her color
When in doubt, go with black, white or silver. They work with almost any color
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to ask questions along the way. Your trained, professional consultants are here to help you and make it an easy, pain free experience.
