When getting ready for a pageant I think people assume that finding the perfect evening gown will be the hardest piece of wardrobe. But it is the experience of the staff here at Proms Pageants and Pretty Things at the Brides House that interview wear always ends up being the thing that trips people up. So let’s break this down and see if we can’t make choosing your next interview outfit a little easier.
Dress or suit or jumpsuit?
This will all depend on the system you are competing in. Some systems (like Miss USA) are a little more fashion forward and you can get away with more. Pant suits and jumpsuits are perfectly find for this system. Some systems however (like National American Miss) tend to go a little more traditional and look for a businessier look. Dresses, suits or the like might be a safer bet for these systems. You will also want to know if you are doing a sitting or standing interview and keep that in mind with your selection. If you are sitting you will want to practice that and make sure that you dress isn’t too short when you sit down. Will your back be to the judges between interviews? Then make sure that the back fits well so you look as good going as you do coming. Not sure what will be ok? Just go to the website, or the reigning queens or get in touch with the director. They will be happy to help you look your best for their system.
Solid colors or patterns?
This is depends more on the individual than the system. Some girls can wear a pattern and pull it off, some just can’t. You do want to make sure if you choose a pattern that you pick something that complements you and isn’t overwhelming on you. You want to make sure the focus is on you and not the outfit. Also, if you chose to wear a pattern be prepared to talk about why you choose that outfit (that can really apply to any interview outfit but specifically if it has a pattern or theme to it).
Nude shoes or not?
Often time interview shoe choose is an unwritten rule of a system. Systems that tend to be more fashion forward usually like to see a more finished look so selecting the right shoes can be an important part of the outfit. Others, even if it’s not written in the rules, prefer the girls to wear nude. Not sure, ask your director or reigning queens. While the “wrong” shoes won’t lose the pageant for you it surely can’t step you off on the wrong foot with the judges.
Wearing the appropriate casual jewelry for the outfit will be the perfect finishing touch. Just make sure you don’t wear big rhinestones (stage earrings) or something too big and attention getting. You will be standing (or sitting) right in front of the judges. You want to make sure the jewelry complements the outfit without taking it over.
Picking the perfect interview outfit will be easy if you just keep these simple tips in mind. And if you’re still not feeling comfortable with your selection, come see us. We would love to help pick the perfect look for you.
